ABOUT

Wakelyns Agroforestry in Suffolk, is a pioneering 23 hectare organic farm established in 1994 by Martin and Ann Wolfe. It is one of the UK’s oldest and most diverse agroforestry sites, designed to integrate trees - willow, hazel, fruit, nut and timber; with arable crop rotation to increase biodiversity, sustainability and resilience.

The farm features 56 rows of trees, including willow for coppice and mixed fruit and nut varieties, with 10–15 metre-wide alleys between them for arable crops such as wheat and lentils. The layout allows trees and crops to support one another, creating a productive system rooted in ecological principles.

As a research-led farm, studies have demonstrated that its agroforestry systems can deliver greater overall productivity than monocultures. Wakelyns is a working example of ecological theory put into practice; a sustainable, low-input agricultural model designed for long-term resilience.

Since 2020 under the stewardship of David Wolfe and Amanda Illing, Wakelyns has evolved and expanded beyond farming.

Wakelyns operates as a collaborative community hub, home to small-scale Enterprises, including Silva, where growing, baking, research, and learning happen side by side. Enterprises include: Willow Phoenix, Be More Bees, Contemporary Hempery, Wakelyns Veg, Wakelyns Textiles, Wakelyns Nature, Natural Habitat, Wakelyns Fruit Press, and J Calvert Designs.
